Querétaro is preparing a new space dedicated to butterflies that could become a great excuse for a getaway from Mexico City. Bicentennial Park will feature a butterfly conservatory that aims to be the largest in the Bajío region, complete with a laboratory, breeding facility, and native species.
The opening is scheduled for January 2027, according to Juan Pablo Cárdenas, the facility’s director. The project will be located near the park’s nursery and will make use of existing infrastructure, including a covered area that was previously used for plants.
The Querétaro butterfly garden will have a laboratory and a breeding facility
The best part? It won’t be a space solely for observing butterflies. The project includes a laboratory and a breeding facility, where visitors can learn about their development from the larval stage through to their emergence.
Specialists and biologists will participate in its development, in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ). In addition to hosting native species, the project will focus on conserving specimens that pass through this area.
This is significant because Santa Rosa Jáuregui is part—albeit a small part—of the monarch butterfly migration route.
The project will be funded by the private sector, while the municipal government will provide the space. Tests are already underway, and an admission fee is being considered, although the price has not yet been announced.
More news from Bicentennial Park
The butterfly garden will be part of the park’s attraction restoration efforts. The reopening of the Extreme Circuit is scheduled for November 2026, where the zip lines, suspension bridge, and climbing wall are being renovated with an investment of one million pesos.
Bicentennial Park covers 158 hectares and is located in the Santa Rosa Jáuregui district. During the 2026 summer vacation, it welcomed 27,946 visitors, a 90% increase compared to the same period the previous year.
Although some reports indicate that the project aims to become one of the largest butterfly conservatories in Latin America, for now the most prudent statement is that it seeks to be the largest in the Bajío region.
