El Niño will affect Mexico City particularly in 2027. According to forecasts, this meteorological phenomenon is expected to reach very strong intensity by the end of 2026, and we will feel its effects most strongly next year.
El Niño is being constantly monitored due to its evolution and the potential effects it will have on Mexico. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cited by Gaceta UNAM, this meteorological phenomenon is expected to continue strengthening.
Alejandro Jaramillo Moreno, from UNAM’s Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change, explained that the effects of El Niño will vary by region. While the north and west may experience heavier rainfall in the fall and winter, the central, southern, and southeastern parts of the country are expected to face drier conditions at the start of spring.

Julián Edem Chahín, from the same UNAM institute, explained that between April and June 2027, drought is forecast for central, southern, and southeastern Mexico, as well as an increased number of wildfires and days with poor air quality.
The northeast of the country is most likely to experience above-normal rainfall between January and March 2027.
For now, this is the forecast regarding El Niño, but it remains under constant monitoring. In fact, the National Weather Service’s website explains that there is a high probability that the warm phase of this phenomenon will reach historic levels.
