The 2026–2027 cold front season in Mexico began in September, and so far, three of the 56 cold fronts predicted for the season have occurred. In fact, as we approach the end of the year, the number of cold fronts we’ll see each month will increase.
According to the forecast by the National Water Commission (Conagua), six more cold fronts than average are expected this season. Each one typically brings low temperatures, strong winds, and even light rain.
For its part, the National Center for Disaster Prevention explains that each cold front can last between 3 and 7 days. They usually originate near the North Pole and reach our country after crossing the United States.
Which month will have the most cold fronts this season?
Although we’ve already had several days of low temperatures in Mexico, the truth is that the season is just beginning. According to Conagua, the month with the most cold fronts will be December, with 9, followed by November and January 2027, with 8 systems each.
Here’s the number of cold fronts expected each month:
- October: 7
- November: 8
- December: 9
- January 2027: 8
- February 2027: 7
- March 2027: 6
- April 2027: 6
- May 2027: 2
The season usually lasts until May of each year; however, the coldest months are typically December, January, and February. The effects of El Niño must also be taken into account.
This phenomenon could favor cold fronts and lead to wetter conditions in different parts of the country. However, by early spring, it is expected to cause droughts and more days of poor air quality in the central region of the country, including Mexico City.
Stay tuned to official accounts and take precautions against the low temperatures expected toward the end of the year.
