Every corner of this forest holds a secret or an interesting story; from a mural that was underwater for four decades to a tree that is said to have been planted by Nezahualcoyotl. It is the ahuehuete El Sargento, one of the oldest trees in Chapultepec.
According to information from the Chapultepec Forest, this tree reached a height of 40 meters in its best days. It is considered one of the oldest trees in the forest, having lived nearly 500 years.
In fact, it is so old that it is believed that it was Nezahualcoyotl himself who planted it in Chapultepec, by order of Moctezuma. Just as you read: this tree has witnessed much of Mexico City’s history.
Unfortunately, El Sargento, which owes its name to students of the old Military College, died in 1969 due to various factors, including pollution. However, part of its trunk can still be seen in the first section of Chapultepec Forest.

As we mentioned before, only part of the trunk of the tree remains. However, we highly recommend you to visit this historic and emblematic place of Chapultepec Forest.
