Can you imagine strolling along Paseo de la Reforma while learning about the history of Carlota and Maximilian? That will be one of the must-see tours of the August Historical Walks, a free program organized by Mexico City’s Ministry of Culture that invites you every Sunday to discover the city’s past alongside experts. In addition to this journey back to the 19th century, you’ll also be able to explore the San Juan de Aragón Forest and the former Churubusco convent.
This program, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, aims to help residents and visitors rediscover the city through its streets, monuments, and historic sites. Best of all, all tours are free, and no prior registration is required.
Travel Back to the 19th Century Along the Paseo de la Reforma
The highlight of the tour will be on Sunday, August 17, when you’ll walk along Paseo de la Reforma to learn how this iconic avenue came to be during the Second Mexican Empire. Along the way, you’ll discover the story of Carlota and Maximilian, as well as some of the most iconic monuments and buildings lining this important thoroughfare. The tour begins at 10:45 a.m. at the Estela de Luz.
The program continues on August 24 with a tour of the San Juan de Aragón Forest, where you’ll learn how this space evolved from a New Spain hacienda into one of the capital’s most important green spaces.
Finally, on August 31, you can visit the National Museum of the Interventions, the former Churubusco Convent, and Xicoténcatl Park to discover the traces left by the U.S. invasion and learn about one of the most important episodes in Mexico City’s history.

The Historical Walks are completely free and do not require prior registration. Just arrive at 10:45 a.m. at the meeting point for the tour of your choice and look for the guides, who will be wearing brown vests with the words “Paseos Históricos.”
