This neighborhood of the Historic Center never ceases to amaze us with its culture, gastronomy and history. This time we arrived at Café Bagdad, a place located in the Plaza de la Aguilita de la Merced, which seduced us with its architecture and food. In addition, it is located in one of the most important sites for Mexican culture and that, unfortunately, almost no one knows about.
The place will greet you with a roaster that gives off the aroma of freshly ground beans. And although this drink is the jewel in the crown, it is not the only delicious thing, as you will find breakfasts, desserts and even lunch. All at a very affordable price.
One of the oldest coffee shops in Mexico City.

Café Bagdad was installed in a large house dating back to the 18th century and later belonged to Lebanese communities that settled in the Historic Center. It opened its doors approximately 80 years ago.
One of its attributes is to serve good coffee, which comes from different regions of Mexico and is roasted on site. To go with it: good enmoladas, huevos motuleños or tecolotes.
There is also sweet bread, cakes, sandwiches and even salads. The average check per person is $120!
But, best of all, this place offers a quiet stay; a space to isolate yourself from the hustle and bustle and refresh yourself. Its skylight, fountain and walls make this an extraordinary place.
Café Bagdad and the Mexica cosmovision

The café is located in Plaza Juan José Baz, also known as Plaza de la Aguilita. In this place the Mexica found the mythical sign to form their empire.
Let’s remember that the Mexica were looking for a place to found a city. Huitzilopochtli, their deity, ordered them to look for an eagle standing on a nopal cactus, while devouring a snake and flapping its wings.
The Mexica warriors undertook the search and found the eagle in 1325, 200 years after the prophecy. In that place, where today is the Plaza de la Aguilita and before that the lake of Texcoco, the city of Tenochtitlán was founded.
We don’t want to give you any more spoilers; we would love for you to live the experience of being in a place with so much history, so take a plunge to the Merced neighborhood to visit Café Bagdad ( 📍 Plaza Juan José Baz 4, Centro). Their service hours are ⏰ Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Who are you inviting?
