The Camino de Santiago in Spain has become a dream journey for thousands of people around the world. But now you no longer have to cross the Atlantic to experience something similar, because Querétaro has just inaugurated its own Camino de Santiago route in the heart of the Sierra Gorda.
The route was officially unveiled in early 2026 by Governor Mauricio Kuri and the Order of the Knights of the Way of St. James. The route, known as the Initiation Trail, will stretch 127 kilometers across seven stages and promises an experience of hiking, reflection, and connection with nature.
The best part is that you don’t need to be a professional athlete to hike it. Unlike the original Camino de Santiago in Spain, this Mexican version was designed as an accessible, low-impact route so that virtually anyone can enjoy it.
Where does the Camino de Santiago route go in Querétaro?

The route will traverse some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Sierra Gorda in Querétaro. Along the way, you’ll pass through municipalities such as Pinal de Amoles, Landa de Matamoros, Arroyo Seco, and Jalpan de Serra.
In addition to walking through mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, you’ll also discover small villages steeped in history, traditional cuisine, and natural viewpoints that make the experience even more special.
According to Alejandro Rubín, president of the International Association for Tourism Cooperation and Development, this Mexican route even has a symbolic blessing from the original Camino de Santiago in Spain, making it a new point of interest for travelers and pilgrims.
An accessible and safe hiking experience
Another of the most appealing aspects of this new Santiago Route is that it was designed to be safe and welcoming for those who are just beginning to explore long-distance hiking.
The Sierra Gorda is one of the most peaceful and best-preserved natural areas in Querétaro, so the route aims to promote sustainable tourism with a low environmental impact.
So yes: there is now a Mexican version of the famous Camino de Santiago, and it’s much closer to Mexico City than you might have imagined.
