Traveling by road is always an adventure, but to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, it’s essential to be aware of the new toll booth rules recently implemented by the authorities. The Federal Agency for Roads and Bridges Revenue and Related Services (CAPUFE) announced the new guidelines that will regulate its electronic toll collection service.
The main objective of these regulations is to optimize administration and ensure much faster and more efficient vehicle crossings at toll plazas.
One of the most important rules is the correct placement of the electronic payment device. The IAVE tag— or any other brand—must be placed directly on the vehicle’s windshield, just below the rearview mirror. This will ensure that the system detects it without any problems when crossing.
To make your trip easier, CAPUFE offers three main payment methods:
- Simple Prepayment: Users must manually add funds to their device via the IAVE portal or app. It is necessary to maintain a minimum balance based on the type of vehicle and the toll plaza through which they are passing.
- Postpaid: Charges will be automatically applied to the credit or debit card that has been previously registered. If you do not yet have your IAVE Tag, you can easily purchase it through the website iave.capufe.gob.mx or in person at toll plazas operated by CAPUFE.
- Cash: If you do not have the electronic card, you must pay the current toll in cash directly to the booth attendant, using the multimodal lanes.
It should be noted that these guidelines were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) and will take effect this Thursday, July 30, 2026.

Through its official X account, CAPUFE announced that it will promote electronic payment at toll booths on the Mexico-Cuernavaca and Cuernavaca-Acapulco highways.
Specifically, Tlalpan (on the Mexico City–Cuernavaca highway) and Ing. Francisco Velasco Durán, Paso Morelos, Palo Blanco, and La Venta on the Cuernavaca–Acapulco highway.
