Two condors born in Chapultepec in Baja California will soon be released as part of the Binational Program for the Recovery and Conservation of the California Condor, in which our country participates.
The condors that will be transferred to Baja California were born at the Chapultepec Zoo in 2024. They are Tuwálo, who was born on February 2, and Kuiiy, who was born on March 8.
According to a press release from Mexico City’s Secretary of the Environment (Sedema), both condors (a female and a male) are identified through a microchip, which is part of their preparation for life in the wild.
Two condors born in Chapultepec will be released: everything you need to know

The first thing to mention is that these birds are considered endangered. Through the aforementioned program we seek to recover this species.
Tuwálo and Kuiiy will soon be transferred to the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, in Baja California, where they will be prepared for reintroduction to their natural habitat. Although the date was not announced, it is expected to be soon.
It is worth mentioning that this program is promoted by Mexico and the United States. In fact, the Chapultepec Zoo is the only institution of its kind outside the U.S. that has successfully reproduced this bird.
According to information from Semarnat, the California condor became extinct in Mexico in 1939; however, several efforts have been made to recover this bird.
In 2002 the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir had the first reintroduction of the California condor. You will be happy to know that to date several free-living births have been reported. As of April 2023, at least 42 free-living birds have been counted.
