At the end of 2024, the permanent driver’s license officially returned to Mexico City. The deadline to apply for it was December 2025; however, it was later extended to December 31, 2026.
At a press conference on Monday, July 27, Mexico City authorities ruled out extending this period again; therefore, you will have until December 31, 2026, to obtain the permanent driver’s license in Mexico City.
“This plan remains in effect throughout 2026, but we’ve already begun to phase out this Permanent Driver’s License program… Undoubtedly, the benefit is permanent and the license will remain valid. But we’ve scheduled the registration period to last only through this year,” explained Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón, Secretary of Administration and Finance.

It’s important to note that, to obtain this license, you must not have any convictions for traffic-related offenses or penalties under the “Drive Sober” program.
