Do you use Ecobici to get around Mexico City? Well, get ready—changes for the better are coming. It was announced that the system will expand with 6,000 additional bikes, more bike stations, and coverage in three boroughs where there were previously no bikes: Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan.
With this expansion, Ecobici will increase its fleet from 9,000 to 15,000 bicycles, representing a 60% increase in the number of units. There will also now be a total of 1,111 bike stations in Mexico City.
But without a doubt, the most striking development is that you’ll now be able to find them in new areas of Mexico City. The addition of Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan will expand the system’s coverage and open up new possibilities for using bikes on your daily commutes.
That said, the exact locations of the new bike stations—or when they will begin operating—have not yet been announced.
Ecobici’s 15,000 bicycles will be equipped with satellite tracking devices
In addition to adding bikes and stations, there will be changes to the bikes themselves. Now all Ecobici bikes will have satellite tracking —yes, all 15,000 of them!
A new maintenance center is also planned to service bicycles that are damaged or need adjustments. In addition, all bicycles will become part of Mexico City’s public assets.
As for the expansion of service areas, it remains to be seen which neighborhoods and specific locations within these boroughs will be included in the new coverage.
