A charro suit embroidered with the images of iconic soccer players, a stadium made of volcanic rock, trees of life, and incredible textiles are part of the exhibition called the Banamex Popular Art Cup, which you can visit for a limited time in Mexico City’s Historic Center.
In this exhibition, you’ll see 145 pieces created by artisans from all over Mexico. Each one is made using different techniques and materials. You’ll see figures made of papier-mâché, wax, miniatures, and various textiles, as well as pieces made of clay, wood, and various metals.
It’s worth noting that this exhibition is part of a contest; in fact, you’ll see several winning pieces during your tour, including a charro suit embroidered with the images of iconic players. It was crafted in Chimalhuacán, State of Mexico, by Marlene Péres and Jesús Buendía.
How long can I see the Banamex Popular Art Cup exhibition?
The first thing you need to know is that this exhibition is located at the Palacio de Iturbide, at 17 Madero Street in Mexico City’s Historic Center. You can visit it from May 23 to September 13.
Admission is free, and you can visit from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We’ve already been there, and it’s incredible. We recommend arriving early so you can appreciate the details of each piece. Keep in mind that it took the artisans anywhere from weeks to months to create each of these figures.
We were very surprised by the stadium made of volcanic stone (which doubles as a molcajete), all the trees of life, and a wooden foosball table where the players are pre-Hispanic gods. Don’t forget to check out the miniatures and the pieces made of amate paper; they are true gems.
Artisans from states such as Oaxaca, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and many others participated in this exhibition.
