Women Take the Wheel of the Metrobús! Mexico City has just made a major change to its public transportation system: the Quetzalcóatl Route has become the first Metrobús route driven exclusively by women.
The news was announced on October 13, 2026, and is part of a strategy to open up more job opportunities for women in sectors that have historically been dominated by men.
In total, 48 female drivers are in charge of this route, which connects Paseo de la Reforma with the two terminals of Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
Which Metrobús route is operated exclusively by women?
This is the Quetzalcóatl Route, a service that was extended on January 30, 2026, to the Amajac station, located on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue.
This route serves Terminals 1 and 2 of Benito Juárez International Airport, making it a public transportation alternative for those who need to travel to the airport area.
In addition, it has a feature that sets it apart visually: its 19 8.5-meter electric buses are decorated with a feathered serpent, a figure that refers to Quetzalcóatl.
Now, these buses also stand out for having a driving crew composed exclusively of women.
Metrobús Increases the Number of Female Drivers in Mexico City
The addition of these female drivers also represents an increase in women’s participation within the system.
According to Metrobús, the number of female drivers rose from 33 in February to 80 in October 2026, representing an increase from 1.6% to 3.7% of the total number of drivers.
In addition, 57 female drivers have already received certification from the National Council for Standardization and Certification of Occupational Competencies (CONOCER).
This certification includes theoretical and practical evaluations related to driving rapid transit buses, as part of efforts to strengthen road safety.
With this initiative, Metrobús seeks to increase women’s participation in operational roles and move toward a more inclusive transportation system in the capital.
