If you love nature or are looking for something different to do in the coming weeks, Hongosto 2026 has a program worth exploring. The Mexico City Secretariat of the Environment (SEDEMA), in collaboration with the FCME Mycology Laboratory at UNAM’s Faculty of Sciences, presented a program featuring 43 scientific , educational, cultural, and recreational activities designed to introduce you to the fascinating world of fungi and their importance to ecosystems.
Under the slogan “Creating Citizen Mycelium, ” this event invites you to learn about the role fungi play in our city’s biodiversity and to create a collaborative network inspired by mycelium, the underground structure that connects these organisms with other forms of life.
What activities will be featured at Hongosto 2026?
From July 28 to September 5, various venues throughout Mexico City will host mycological tours, workshops, lectures, photography exhibitions, courses on growing mushrooms at home, environmental events, culinary experiences, and even a themed camp.
Highlights of the activities include the “Fungi in the Sierra de Santa Catarina” Camp, workshops on growing edible mushrooms at home, the “From the Forest to the Table” cooking workshop, the keynote lecture “Urban Diversity: Macrofungi of Mexico City,” and the photo exhibition “Fungi: The Hidden Kingdom of Mexico City.”
Also participating will be environmental educators, community brigades, ejidos, communities, Environmental Culture Centers, the Museum of Natural History and Environmental Culture, as well as citizen groups that promote awareness and conservation of the capital’s natural heritage.
