As part of the World Cup activities in Mexico City, there will be guided tours of restricted areas of the Templo Mayor, which are currently reserved for archaeological research.
One of Mexico City’s most iconic sites is, without a doubt, the Templo Mayor. Not only will you see part of our pre-Hispanic past here, but there are also areas that are still being studied by experts.
On these guided tours, you’ll explore the Temple of Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl, which was discovered in 2010, as well as an area dedicated to the Game of Ball, which was uncovered in 2014. Best of all, staff from the Templo Mayor Museum’s Educational Communications department will accompany you on this tour. You’ll learn many secrets and important facts.
When are the guided tours of the restricted areas of the Templo Mayor?
Research is still being conducted in these areas, so access is restricted. Guided tours will be available until July 19, 2026. You can join a tour at one of three times: 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. It’s essential that you schedule your visit by sending an email to edutemplomayor@inah.gob.mx or direccion.mtm@inah.gob.mx.
These tours are included in your museum admission ticket, which costs $105 per person. It’s important to note that, once these guided tours are over, these areas will close again so that archaeologists can continue their excavations, according to a statement from the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
The Templo Mayor Museum is located at Seminario 8, in Mexico City’s Historic Center. You can visit it Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
