What today looks desolate and full of graffiti was built with the purpose of turning it into the most spectacular hotel of the then Federal District. It is the Posada del Sol, a place of more than seven thousand square meters that has been abandoned for several years.
This 2025 will be the 80th anniversary of the inauguration of the Posada del Sol, a hotel located on Niños Héroes Avenue, in the Doctores neighborhood. Although the entrance to the hotel is not allowed, from the sidewalk you can see part of this imposing construction.
According to information from El Financiero, this hotel was created by Fernando Saldaña and was inaugurated in 1945.
Saldaña’s idea was to build the most spectacular hotel in the city; in fact, it had close to 500 rooms, as well as party rooms, auditorium and exclusive spaces; however, it functioned as a hotel for a short time before closing permanently.
Little is known about the reasons that led the place to close; what is certain is that it has been abandoned for most of its existence, which has given rise to different legends.
The most popular one talks about a girl who got lost and died in the place; it is said that her spirit still wanders in the enclosure, which has been used by different government agencies and even as a location for filming movies and series. There are even those who claim to have seen the ghost of the little girl walking the corridors of this old hotel.
What will happen to the Posada del Sol in CDMX?
At the beginning of 2021, the then head of government of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the property would be donated to the Benito Juarez University in order to build the University of Law.
As detailed in a document published on the official website of the Universidad del Bienestar Benito Juárez dated April 30, 2025, the works on the premises have not yet begun; however, the project is still in force.
Due to the age of the building, studies were conducted to determine the conditions of the building and how it will be renovated. Just as you read it: everything indicates that this former abandoned hotel will become a university.
