Mexico City is known for having emblematic buildings, not only for their age, but also for the history that surrounds them. Such is the case of the place known as Casa Austin, an old site that was completely moved 18 meters. We present the house that was moved on Paseo de la Reforma.
The construction of Torre Reforma not only transformed the landscape of this Mexico City thoroughfare, but also implied moving a building that was almost 100 years old. Casa Austin, also known as Casa O’Hea, was built in 1929, according to CNN.
In order not to damage it or tear it down, it was completely moved 18 meters and then returned to its original location. That’s right! They practically took the entire property and moved it to the north of CDMX for a few weeks.
Get to know the house they moved in Reforma
Through a video posted on Torre Reforma’s YouTube channel, architect Benjamín Romano explained how the process was to move this property.
He detailed that the foundations of the house were encapsulated with concrete. Subsequently, it was moved 18 meters to the north of the CDMX using a concrete tray.
You are probably wondering: why did the building have to be moved? It was to build the necessary walls for the Torre Reforma parking lot. Once they were ready, the house was moved back to its original location.
It currently houses a MacStore and you can see it next to Torre Reforma, even part of the house is inside the building.
