To mark the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) unveiled a 25-peso coin, as well as other commemorative coins. Each coin features different designs referencing soccer and the host cities: Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City.
The $25 coin is made of gold. The obverse will feature the national coat of arms, while the reverse will have different designs. In the case of the Mexico City edition, we will see an axolotl, as well as various iconic sites such as the Monument to the Revolution.
The coin for Guadalajara features a jimador, while the one for Monterrey depicts Cerro de la Silla. The fourth design is dedicated to the entire country and features a jaguar as well as butterflies.
Where can I get the 25-peso coin for the 2026 World Cup?
The $20 coins will be put into circulation starting Monday, May 18; however, the $10 coin (which is made of silver) and the $25 coin will be available for purchase starting this Thursday, May 14.
As detailed in a press release by the Bank of Mexico. You can purchase these coins at authorized retailers such as the Interactive Museum of Economics and the Mexican Mint.
Remember that the 2026 World Cup will kick off on June 11 in Mexico City. A total of 13 matches will be played, 10 of which are group stage matches.
The opening match between Mexico and South Africa will take place at the Mexico City Stadium.
