Would you like to see what the Day of the Dead is like outside of Mexico City and experience one of Puebla’s most striking traditions? The INAH has already announced its Day of the Dead Cultural Tour, which will take you to Huaquechula to explore the famous monumental altars.
Mark your calendars—this is a one-time event! The tour will take place on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and depart from Mexico City. The cost is $900 per person, and the tour will be led by historian Sergio Fuentes Martínez.
This trip is part of the INAH’s November Cultural Tours and is titled “Altars and Offerings for Our Dead: Huaquechula, Puebla.” The goal is for you to experience the traditions of this town during one of the most significant dates on the calendar.
What will you discover on this Day of the Dead tour?
One of the stops on the itinerary is the former Convent of San Martín de Tours, a 16th-century building linked to the Franciscan order and part of Huaquechula’s historical heritage.
However, the stars of the show will be the monumental altars erected each year in the town to commemorate the faithful departed. These offerings are one of the cultural expressions for which Huaquechula is widely recognized during the Day of the Dead season.
The tour will allow you to visit these altars and get an up-close look at a tradition that blends elements of the Christian religion and the indigenous world.
The tour will also include the church bells, which solemnly and respectfully announce the arrival of the souls of the departed. There will also be time set aside for lunch and to explore downtown Huaquechula on your own.
