A chocolate festival at the Monument to the Revolution, a nighttime picnic in Chapultepec Forest… Mexico City has all kinds of plans for Love and Friendship Day. But if you’re craving something more romantic and you’re one of those who think that “every day is Valentine’s Day,” the Hellenic Cultural Institute is hosting an intimate candlelit concert featuring legendary love songs at the end of this month.
A special edition of the famous Candlelight concerts that transforms one of our city’s historical gems into a luminous (and loving) live music show.
When will the concert of love songs be held at the Hellenic Cultural Institute in Mexico City?
It’s not February 14, but the repertoire will make you feel a little like it. The concert will be on Friday, February 27, in the Gothic Chapel of the Hellenic Cultural Institute, with a single performance at 7:00 p.m.
During the evening, you will hear old love songs such as At Last by Etta James and Can’t Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis Presley, along with more modern ones such as Love on Top by Beyoncé and All of Me by John Legend.
The history behind the Gothic Chapel of the Hellenic Cultural Institute
Located at Avenida Revolución 1500, you’ve probably walked past the Hellenic Cultural Institute at some point. But did you know that its Gothic Chapel arrived in Mexico City in pieces in two thousand boxes?
It was built in Spain in the 14th century, and after much of the national heritage was put up for sale by the Mendizábal Disentailment (similar to the Reform Laws in Mexico), American magnate Randolph Hearst bought it in the 1920s. It arrived in New York, but after the Great Depression, Mexican businessman Nicolás González Jáuregui acquired it in 1954 and brought it to Mexico City.
It was built here and is now a key part of the city’s cultural life, managed by the federal government.

So if you don’t have any romantic plans this month and you want to surprise your significant other with something beyond Valentine’s Day, on February 27, love sounds like Whitney Houston and Elton John with this magical concert in one of our city’s architectural treasures.
But if you’re single (which doesn’t mean lonely) or simply don’t like love very much but do love concerts, the Hellenic Cultural Institute is hosting more live music evenings with other tributes, such as those dedicated to Queen and The Lord of the Rings.
