1. The two Fridas
This iconic piece by Frida Kahlo, dating from 1939, is housed at the Museum of Modern Art. In addition to appreciating the work, you will learn more about the painter’s personal life; her relationship with Diego Rivera and her ties with the French artist Marcel Duchamp.
The painting is called Las dos Fridas. A Tale of Two Cities and shows a double self-portrait of Frida and the influence her first trip to Paris had on her.

2. Cosmic terror
This is a work by Rufino Tamayo made in 1954. The piece is part of the collection of the National Museum of Art; it belongs to the exhibition “XX in the XXI”. It is an oil painting on canvas, it should be noted that Tamayo’s work was focused on the interpretation of humanity and the cosmos.

3. Allegory
At the Museo Nacional de la Acuarela you will find Alegoría ( 1915), one of the most outstanding works of the artist Saturnino Herrán, who was one of the main artistic influences of the 20th century. The human figures, made with watercolor and pencil, represent justice.

4. Bajio Flower
This piece by artist Eduardo Cataño could not be left out of the list of Mexican paintings. Flor de Bajío is a 1962 work that is in the Soumaya Museum; the image was made to be printed in calendars of renowned companies of the time. The image, in oil, was a representation of national identity.

5. Still Life: Viva la Vida
This is one of the most famous Mexican paintings by Frida Kahlo in 1954. It is the last painting she made while she was ill, after the amputation of one of her legs. It is a tribute to life that was made with oils. The piece is located in the Frida Kahlo Museum of Coyoacán.
