Confirmed! In 2026 MUNAL will receive the mural Mapa Producción de la República Mexicana (Rutas Marítimas) by artist Miguel Covarrubias. But first, the piece must be restored.
Cartographic art was an important part of Covarrubias’ career. In fact, he created a famous series called Pageant of the Pacific composed of six mural maps, which were exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco.
However, they were not the only ones. The artist collected, drew and analyzed maps of different regions; today his mural maps are a reference in the history of art.
Well, one of them will arrive at the beautiful National Museum of Art, in the Historic Center. It is a 1947 piece that was in the iconic Hotel del Prado, located in the Juarez neighborhood of CDMX.
Covarrubias’ mural was damaged in the 1985 earthquake.

Let’s remember that in the earthquake of September 19, 1985, the Hotel del Prado was the victim of significant damage. The building had to be demolished, remaining only in the memory of the people of the capital.
This place not only housed Covarrubias’ work, but also the famous mural Sueño de una tarde dominica en la Alameda Central (Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Central Alameda ) by Diego Rivera. However, this work was quickly protected.
According to INBAL, the Production Map of the Mexican Republic (Maritime Routes) was in a poor state of conservation. Loss of support, fractures and sinking are some of the impacts.
In 2024 the Carpentry Workshop of CENCROPAM began restoration work. And although there is no exact date, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature confirmed that the mural by Miguel Covarrubias will arrive at MUNAL during 2026.
Don’t miss one of the most important works of this artist, and get ready to run to MUNAL!
