Looking for a unique getaway near Mexico City during the rainy season? This year, the Mycological Tour with the Pjiekakjoo Mushroom Gatherers returns—an experience that combines nature, gastronomy, and ancestral knowledge in the forests of the State of Mexico.
The activity takes place in the community of Lomas de Teocaltzingo, within the San Juan Atzingo Communal Territory, in the municipality of Ocuilan. Here, you can explore the forest accompanied by women who have preserved traditional knowledge about edible wild mushrooms, sharing their expertise with those who wish to learn more about the region’s natural wealth.
An experience to discover the world of mushrooms
During the tour, you’ll walk along forest trails to observe and identify different species of mushrooms that appear during the rainy season. In addition to learning about their characteristics and ecological importance, you’ll discover their traditional and culinary uses with the help of a local expert guide.
The experience also includes a mushroom preparation workshop, a display table to learn about different species, and two meals prepared with this seasonal ingredient: breakfast and lunch. All of this comes with insurance coverage for activities within the forest.
More than just a walk, this is an opportunity to connect with the biocultural richness of the Pjiekakjoo people and understand the close relationship between the community and the ecosystem it inhabits.
Dates for the 2026 mushroom-hunting season
The tours will take place on Saturdays during the rainy season, a time when the forest boasts its greatest diversity of wild mushrooms. Available dates are July 18 and 25; August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29; September 5, 12, 19, and 26; and October 3, 10, 17, and 24.
