As part of the Day of the Dead activities we will see a free opera in Mexico City’s Zócalo. It is Cuauhtemóctzin, a film opera that will be told in Nahuatl and Mayan languages, as well as in Spanish. There will be three performances.
As you know, this year 2025 will be the 700th anniversary of the founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlan and to commemorate it, various activities will be held throughout the year; even the Day of the Dead offering in the Zócalo will be inspired by this event.
In this opera, based on the essay Episodio Guatimótzin by Aniceto Ortega, and reworked by Máynez Champion, we will immerse ourselves in the narration of Ysabel who, on her deathbed, recalls her relationship with Cuauhtemóctzin, as well as the siege of the Mexicas against the conquistadors and other passages of the time.
In addition to several artists, the Metropolitan Camerata Orchestra, the Cantus Hominum Choral Society and the pre-Hispanic group Tribu will participate in this show.
When will be the opera shows in the Zócalo of CDMX for Day of the Dead?

According to a press release by the Ministry of Culture, there will be three free performances in the Zócalo: October 31, as well as November 1 and 2. The schedule will be announced at a later date.
