CDMX is expected to experience seven days of heavy to intense rains, hail, thunderstorms, and winds with violent gusts starting this Thursday, June 20, 2024.
This hot season tested our patience and endurance, but everything seems to indicate that this time there will finally be a significant drop in temperature.
The Secretariat of Integral Risk Prevention and Civil Protection announced the above in its x account. Their forecast calls for heavy rains to continue through Thursday, June 27.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) explained the reason for this phenomenon. It turns out that a Category 1 tropical cyclone powerhouse is forming in the Gulf of Mexico. The strongest effects will be felt in the southern Pacific states, with torrential rains, landslides and floods.
This, together with a dry line and a low pressure channel forming in the north of the country, will bring rain and afternoon showers to western, southern and central Mexico, including the City of Mexico City.
Isolated rains, wind gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, electrical activity and even hail will affect some areas of our city.
Recommendations for heavy rains in CDMX in 2024
Local Civil Protection issued a series of recommendations for the rainy days ahead:
- It always applies, but throwing garbage in the street clogs sewers and drains, don’t do it.
- Always leave the house with an umbrella or raincoat.
- If you ride a bike, make sure your raincoat is anti-reflective.
- And if you drive, drive preferably on main avenues, avoiding overpasses as much as possible.
- In case you live in risky zones, unplug electrical appliances and protect important documents with plastic.
