It is a fact: the total renovation of Metro Line 3 will begin in 2026. Authorities of the Mexico City government announced how this process will be carried out and informed about the closures in the also called green line.
After Line 1 of the Metro was modernized, it is now the turn of Line 3, which runs from Universidad to Indios Verdes and has been in existence for more than 50 years. At a press conference, it was explained that the purpose of this modernization is to renovate the entire line, addressing structural problems such as subsidence.
In addition, 45 new trains will be purchased and everything will be renovated: automatic piloting, workshops, tunnels, hydraulic installations, air conditioning and more.
When will the renovation of Metro Line 3 begin?
Work on Metro Line 3 will be carried out in stages. They will begin in January 2026 with the intervention in workshops, parking lots and other spaces at Universidad station. “And all the work after that, it will start in the middle of the year, after the World Cup,” explained Clara Brugada, head of the Mexico City government.
You are probably wondering: will Metro Line 3 be closed? The answer is that there will be closures; however, no details have been provided as to what they will be. Adrián Rubalcava, director of the Metro Collective Transportation System, explained that the line will need to be closed for works such as the change of sleepers.
