We’re dying of excitement! After years of waiting, the Dolores Olmedo Museum now has an official reopening date: May 30, when it will finally reopen its doors to the public in Xochimilco.
This iconic venue, which for more than 25 years established itself as one of the city’s most important cultural spaces, houses 148 works by Diego Rivera and the world’s largest collection of pieces by Frida Kahlo, all belonging to the Dolores Olmedo Trust.
Its return marks not only the reopening of a museum but also a reunion with one of the most special places in southern Mexico City, also famous for its gardens, its colonial architecture, and the presence of xoloitzcuintles and peacocks.
A renovated space that will preserve its essence
Since its closure in 2021, the museum has undergone a comprehensive restoration and modernization process to enhance the visitor experience and preserve its heritage.
Notable among the work carried out are the digitization of pre-Hispanic and folk collections, the conservation of archives and the library, the creation of new spaces, as well as technological upgrades and structural reinforcement of the building.
Efforts have also continued to care for its natural surroundings and its iconic animals, ensuring that the experience remains as sensory as it is cultural.
Take note: May 30 will not only mark the reopening of the Dolores Olmedo Museum, but also the day you can purchase tickets, either online through its new website or directly at the box office.
Without a doubt, the return of the Dolores Olmedo Museum is shaping up to be one of the must-see events of the year in Mexico City.
