On Tuesday, August 4, the National Civil Protection Coordination Office released all the details of the September 2026 earthquake drill in Mexico. Unlike previous drills, this one will take place on a weekend. Earthquake alerts on cell phones will sound nationwide, while public address systems will be activated only in certain states.
The Second National Drill 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 19, at exactly 12:00 p.m. The goal of this drill is to strengthen the authorities’ preparedness and response capacity in emergency situations.
It also seeks public participation. At a press conference, officials emphasized the importance of having a family plan at home in the event of an earthquake.
Since the drill will take place on the weekend and many people will be at home, this is a good opportunity to talk with household members and participate in this exercise together, assigning roles and identifying exits and safe zones.
Remember that it is impossible to predict an earthquake, so it is important that we are always prepared.
Everything You Need to Know About the September 2026 Earthquake Drill
On this occasion, five earthquake scenarios will be simulated. For Mexico City, Colima, the State of Mexico, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Nayarit, and Guanajuato, the scenario will be a 7.7-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Tehuacán, Puebla.
As part of this drill, the earthquake alert will be broadcast via three channels: cell phones, public address systems, and radio and television. Regarding the earthquake alert on cell phones, it was specified that it will sound nationwide.
Meanwhile, the seismic alert via loudspeakers will sound in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, and Morelos, according to details provided by authorities at a press conference.
