In our beautiful city not everything is good news, and according to a recent study by TomTom, traffic in CDMX goes from bad to worse, making us the world capital of traffic congestion.
The first thing you should know is that TomTom is a geolocation company that every year delivers a report on the most famous traffic indexes in different cities.
This study analyzed 500 cities in more than 60 countries and through various data from last year, it was possible to know alarming data about our city, such as the amount we lose per year stuck in traffic in Mexico City: 152 hours, equivalent to six days and eight hours.
However, the city with the most traffic in the world was Barranquilla, Colombia, where drivers take approximately 36 minutes and 6 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. Mexico City is in 17th place, with an average of 29 minutes and 30 seconds to drive 10 kilometers.
But then, how come we are the number one city with traffic congestion and not the most traffic in the world? In the study, when they talk about vehicular congestion, they refer to stretches that take much longer when there is traffic than when they are free.
Vehicle congestion is calculated by compiling travel times at different times of the day, and having that data, they compare the times when there is traffic and when there is not. This shows how traffic increases during peak hours in the CDMX.
