Do you remember when Pope Francis visited the CDMX? The Pope passed away this Monday, April 21 at the Vatican at the age of 88. That is why we remember how was his tour in Mexico at the beginning of 2016.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, originally from Argentina, was appointed Pope on March 13, 2013. Three years later he visited Mexico, where he made a tour that lasted six days. He visited places such as the Basilica of Guadalupe and the Cathedral in the Historic Center.
What was Pope Francis’ visit to Mexico City like?
The Pope arrived at Mexico City’s International Airport on the afternoon of February 12, 2016. That Friday he officially began his tour of Mexican territory.
On Saturday, February 13, he carried out different activities; he even visited the National Palace, thus becoming the first Pope to visit that space. That same day he participated in a meeting with bishops at the Metropolitan Cathedral and led a mass at the Basilica of Guadalupe.
During his visit to Mexico City, thousands of people watched him as he rode through the streets in the Popemobile. It is worth mentioning that the CDMX was not the only place he visited during his tour in 2016. He was also in Ecatepec, State of Mexico; Chiapas, Morelia and Ciudad Juarez.
On Wednesday, February 17, after his activities in Ciudad Juarez, he took a plane back to Rome. This was the first and last time Pope Francis visited our country.
