The fabulous Water Lantern Festivalfinally arrives this weekend to treat us to a beautiful nighttime scene on Lake Acitlalin in Xochimilco. Hundreds of eco-friendly paper lanterns bearing people’s messages, memories, and wishes will float to illuminate the night with magic.
Inspired by Thailand’s famous Yipeng Festival, this incredible event—which involves releasing floating lights onto the water—will be free, but if you’d like to get your own lantern to take part in the moving moment when the lanterns are released, you can do so here.
What is this nighttime festival on Lake Acitlalin in Xochimilco all about?
Let yourself be swept away by the magic of the Water Lantern Festival! During the event, hundreds of lanterns will be released onto the water, carrying your best wishes and thoughts. You can write a dream, a reflection, a word of thanks, or any thought that springs from your heart on your own eco-friendly lantern; then you’ll have to let it go so it floats on the water’s surface.
While you enjoy this emotional event , there will be food and drink stands and music for the whole family. It’s a festival to bring the best vibes and celebrate with your loved ones!
Attendance at the Water Lantern Festival is completely free; however, if you want to participate by releasing your own lantern, you can purchase packages that include all the materials ( you’ll receive them on the day of the event). Check them out here.
And to enjoy this event to the fullest without harming nature, a special team will collect every lantern once the event has concluded (to ensure none are left floating on the water).
