Can you imagine encountering the gods of the underworld while touring a museum filled with ancient instruments of torture? This Day of the Dead 2026, the Museum of the Inquisition in Mexico City will offer a nighttime experience that combines theater, dance, music, and legends about death.
It’s called “Gods of the Underworld,” a special tour that will take place from October 24 to November 2, on select dates. For approximately one hour and 15 minutes, visitors will be able to explore the museum accompanied by actors in costume and an atmosphere featuring copal, cempasúchil, and lighting effects.
The experience will have groups of no more than 40 people per session, so the tour will be conducted in small groups.
What will you find at “Gods of the Underworld”?

The adventure will begin with a gravedigger who will guide attendees on a symbolic journey into the world of the dead. Along the way, participants will take on the role of spirits and hear stories inspired by Mesoamerican beliefs.
Among the characters who will appear are Mictlantecuhtli, Ah Puch, and Tezcatlipoca—figures associated with death, the underworld, and the pre-Hispanic worldview.
In addition to the theatrical performances, there will be music, dance, and traditional Day of the Dead elements that will help create a mysterious atmosphere.
One of the most intriguing aspects is that the tour will make use of the museum’s collection, which includes instruments of torture such as the wheel, the rack, and the scales.
Thus, the experience will blend stories from the underworld with a setting that is already unsettling in and of itself.
