If you’re in a hurry to plan your route to celebrate the Day of the Dead, you’ll want to note the opening time for the 2026 Monumental Offering in the Zócalo, because this year the Historic Center has really outdone itself. Imagine walking through the country’s most important plaza and coming face-to-face with an immense tradition that will leave you speechless.
Starting at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, October 29, you’ll be able to see a 32-meter-tall Catrina. Crafted with the talent and traditional techniques of cardboard artists from eastern Mexico City, this piece pays tribute to the great José Guadalupe Posada.
In addition to making the Plancha even more impressive, this piece is seeking to be recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind in the world.
This tour is a true visual feast. The structure will be adorned with nearly 100,000 cempasúchil flowers, proudly grown by local producers.
You’ll also be able to admire colorful sawdust rugs and axolotl sculptures created by various cultural collectives.
So you don’t miss a single detail of this celebration, here’s the key information:
- When to go: The display will be on view from Thursday, October 29, through Monday, November 2, 2026.
- What time: Although the kickoff event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., the installation is outdoors, which means it will be open to the public 24 hours a day. If you go at night, you can enjoy the themed lighting on the surrounding buildings; the lights are turned on between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
- How to get there: The most convenient way is to take Metro Line 2. You can try getting off at the Zócalo/Tenochtitlan station (keeping in mind possible closures due to festivities), or take a leisurely walk from the Allende or Pino Suárez stations.
Now that you know the opening schedule for the 2026 Monumental Offering, head to the Zócalo to be among the first to see it!
