Among the hustle and bustle of daily life, emblematic buildings and museums, two 24-hour restaurants are hidden in the Centro Historico. Each one offers ideal dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner; of course there is no lack of coffee and sweet bread, an ideal combination for these rainy days, isn’t it?
We are talking about Café El Popular and Café La Págoda, two historic restaurants that have been offering traditional dishes and drinks all day and night for many years.
Restaurants that are open 24 hours a day in the Historic Center
Let’s start with Café El Popular, which opened its doors in the late 1940’s. In its menu you will find dishes such as chilaquiles, hot cakes, Aztec soup, molletes, tacos dorados and even tortas de milanesa.
One of their traditional drinks is café con leche, which can be served with sweet bread. In addition to their fixed menu, they usually offer different seasonal dishes throughout the year, such as during Lent or Christmas. In fact, they have gastronomic festivals from time to time.
It is located at Avenida 5 de Mayo #52, in the Historic Center of Mexico City. As a reference, it is a few steps away from the Allende subway station and the Zócalo square.
Now let’s go to Café La Págoda. Here you will also find traditional dishes ranging from chilaquiles and enchiladas to milanesas, enfrijoladas and pozole. They have hot drinks, as well as chamoyadas and malteadas.
According to their official website, the main dishes are not only served during the day; for example, if you have a craving for cochinita tacos at night, they serve them here. Of course, there is also coffee with milk and sweet bread. It is located on Avenida 5 de Mayo 10 F, Historic Center of Mexico City.
It is worth mentioning that both restaurants offer pan de muerto every year, so don’t hesitate to stop by during this time of the year.
