Fans of Mexican horror cinema have an unmissable event this August. As part of the activities for National Mexican Cinema Day, Casa del Lago UNAM will celebrate the 40th anniversary of *Veneno para las hadas* with a special screening that will feature a live musical accompaniment created exclusively for this event.
The film, directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada and considered one of the masterpieces of Mexican horror cinema, will take on a new dimension thanks to a live performance by an ensemble featuring vocalist Camille Mandoki, percussionist Topacio Ortiz, harpist Alondra Máynez, and experimental producer Malintzin Cortés.
Casa del Lago will celebrate the 40th anniversary of *Veneno para las hadas*
Released in 1986, *Veneno para las hadas* transformed what appeared to be a children’s story into a disturbing tale about the imagination, superstition, and the power of suggestion. Starring Ana Patricia Rojo and Elsa María Gutiérrez, the film won five Ariel Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, establishing itself as one of the most important productions in Mexican cinema.
Although Carlos Enrique Taboada also directed classics such as *Hasta el viento tiene miedo*, *Más negro que la noche*, and *El libro de piedra*, many consider *Veneno para las hadas* to be the pinnacle of his filmography and a must-see for fans of the genre.
A special screening for National Mexican Cinema Day
The screening will take place at the Foro Alicia Urreta at Casa del Lago and will feature a screening copy provided by the STPC and the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE). The musical arrangement was conceived specifically for this screening, making it a unique opportunity to rediscover this Mexican horror classic through a completely different experience.
