If you haven’t seen this natural phenomenon, this is the sign you’ve been waiting for. Prepare the road trip 🚗 to visit this bioluminescent beach located in Oaxaca. Specifically, in Puerto Escondido. From Mexico City it will take you between 8 and 12 hours to get there by car.
First of all, you should know that the bioluminescent effect is perceived with greater intensity on rainy season and during the night. Upon contact with water luminous and shimmering sparkles are formed.
According to the Universidad de Costa Rica, this is due to the presence of phytoplankton that have the ability to transform their chemical energy into light energy. Swimming in these waters is quite a spectacle, so get your camera ready.
As we mentioned before, it could take between 8 and 12 hours to get to Puerto Escondido, starting from the Zócalo in CDMX. It all depends on the point, day and time you leave; we recommend leaving before 7:00.
How much does it cost to get to Puerto Escondido by car?
Puerto Escondido is located 775.220 k. m. from the center of Mexico City. According to the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, the estimated arrival time is 9.08 hours. There are seven booths to consider, here are the costs of each one:

It should be noted that Laguna Manialtepec, the bioluminescent beach, is located 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido. This Zone is rich in mangroves, wildlife and marine fauna and many tourist attractions.
Note that this is not the only bioluminescent beach in Oaxaca. There is also the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park in San Pedro Tututepec. This site is located one hour from Puerto Escondido.
