If you have a dog and usually walk it in city parks, this will surely interest you. In several public spaces in the Benito Juárez district, they have already begun installing dog waste stations in Mexico City that are completely changing the way pet waste is managed in the city.
The proposal is simple but innovative: dispose of your dog’s poop in a special bin so it can be turned into compost. Yes, you read that right.
Here’s how the dog waste stations work in Mexico City
These bins are located near dog parks and are designed to properly separate waste. On one side, you should deposit only the feces (without a bag), and on the other, throw away the plastic bag you used to pick them up.
This step is key. For the process to work, the waste must be completely free of plastic. Once you deposit it and close the flap, the bin automatically releases wood chips, an essential material for starting the composting process.
Afterward, the Paynal team collects the waste and transports it to the Hagamos Composta site, where it is transformed into compost that benefits the soil.
This system was installed by Ecobox and represents a significant step toward more sustainable practices in the city.
A change that aims to expand across Mexico City
For now, these stations are located in 14 parks within the Benito Juárez district, but the goal is clear: to reach more than 30 public spaces in the short term.
The initiative not only reduces plastic use but also promotes a culture of responsibility among pet owners. It’s a concrete way to make parks cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
Without a doubt, this is a small change in daily routine that can have a big impact on the city.
