She, besides turning 35 and exceeding by far the life expectancy, is the last panda born in Mexico, do you know her story?
Who is Xin Xin and why is she so special to Mexico?
In 1975, China gave Mexico a pair of pandas named Pe Pe and Ying Ying, who had seven offspring at the Chapultepec Zoo. One of their offspring was Tohui, the first panda to be born and survive outside of China.
Tohui was the mother of Xin Xin, and the father, Chia Chia, came to Mexico on loan from London. Until mid-2022, Chapultepec Zoo had two giant pandas: Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan, the latter daughter of Pe Pe and Ying Ying.
Sadly Shuan Shuan died on July 6, 2022 at the age of 35, making Xin Xin the last panda in the entire country.
This makes the Chapultepec Wildlife Conservation Center the only place in all of Mexico where you can see a giant panda live and in full color and the reason why Xin Xin’s birthday is such a special date!
