The next time you visit Plaza Garibaldi you will find a statue of Chavela Vargas, more than two meters high. This piece was inaugurated on September 29, 2024 and stands next to sculptures of other artists such as Juan Gabriel.
Chavela Vargas was born in 1919 and arrived in Mexico at the age of 17 with the intention of fulfilling her dream of becoming a musician. With the passage of time she managed to consolidate herself as a great singer. She passed away in 2012.

According to information from Mexico City authorities, this statue is 2.10 meters high and is made of bronze. The objective is to pay homage to the artist and her legacy.
The piece was made by Alfredo Lopez Casanova and is accompanied by a plaque on which is written: “I leave you my freedom as an inheritance”; words said by Chavela Vargas in Mexico City’s Zocalo.
Something that distinguishes the sculpture is that Chavela carries her characteristic jorongo, as well as a medallion that she always carried with her.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the only statue you will see in Plaza Garibaldi. You will also see sculptures of other artists, such as José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán and Juan Gabriel.
