It’s time to dig out your plaid shirt and bandana and hop on your bike, because this weekend the Lowrider Bike Ride will take place, starting at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and heading toward Paseo de la Reforma.
This activity is part of the International Museum Day program and revolves around the current exhibition on Chicano culture.
The event will take place this Sunday, May 17, starting at 11:00 a.m. As the name suggests, the ride will have a lowrider theme, an aesthetic that originated with classic cars modified to ride just a few centimeters above the ground.
In the Chicano community, these vehicles are very popular because they are decorated with detailed paintwork and feature a system that raises and lowers the car at the touch of a button. This automotive style is adapted to shiny bicycles with chrome seats; both represent the identity and resilience of Chicano culture.
In that regard, the Bellas Artes bike ride will be held in collaboration with lowrider clubs; it should be noted that this event is open to the general public.
As we mentioned, the ride centers on the exhibition “Aztlán, Time Tunnel,” currently on view at the Palacio de Bellas Artes Museum. The exhibition brings together works of Chicano art that reflect on their social and political context as well as migration tensions; you can see it through September 12, 2026.
In a world that’s always in a hurry, this Sunday’s motto is to ride “slow and low.” Don’t miss this gathering where style becomes a message and the Palacio de Bellas Artes becomes the epicenter of Chicano identity in Mexico City.
