We can already breathe the cempasúchil, the copal and marvel at the colors of the papel picado. However, these places are definitely not to be missed when this season arrives, and they are unmissable places to travel to during the Day of the Dead and enjoy this Mexican tradition to the fullest.
We tell you the places where you will get incredible photos, where you will feel the tradition at its best or where you will marvel at the decorations. Some of them are a couple of hours away by car, and others are too far to take a plane, but they will definitely be an excellent excuse for a getaway!
1. Valley of the Catrinas, Puebla
Every year Atlixco hosts the Valley of the Catrinas, an exhibition of different cardboard pieces that pay homage to Mexico’s Day of the Dead culture.
Each piece measures between 5 and 8 meters, and each edition the designs follow a theme. This fourth edition you will be able to see figures of different historical characters of Mexico in Catrin and Catrina version.

2. Pumpkin Santum, Tlaxcala
This space has two themes, one for Halloween and the other for Day of the Dead, where you can take many incredible photos.
We recommend you to ask for their calendar of events before your visit, as there will be alleyways, shows, legends and lots of marigold flowers.

3. Val’Quirico, Tlaxcala
This is one of the Kingdoms of Mexico that you won’t want to miss this season, as the decorations you’ll find will make you fall in love with it completely.
You will be able to enjoy the first decorations starting October 25. However, the magic begins from November 1 to 3, when more than 13 tons of marigolds decorate the entire site.
This year there will be an exhibition of ofrendas, mega procession of catrinas, a concert of the dead and an exhibition of Catrinas by the plastic artist Guillermo Huerta , everything will be 100% free!

4. Calaverandia, Jalisco
In Jalisco every year opens a theme park dedicated exclusively to the tradition of Day of the Dead. In this fifth edition, an event full of interactive technology, artistic installations, performance, live music, Mexican gastronomy, multimedia shows and the best spots to take pictures awaits you.

5. Janitzio, Michoacán
We continue the list with the capital of Day of the Dead, and is that every November in the towns of Patzcuaro, Michoacan, this festival fills the area with mysticism, tradition, colors and creates an experience that everyone should live at least once in life.
Entire families gather to remember their loved ones in nights that mix offerings, music, candles, copal and the beautiful Patzcuaro Lake in the background.
The must-see of the area? Janitzio, as you will find boat tours that take you to enjoy the view of the candlelit island and the various altars of the dead.

6. Hallowine, Querétaro
If you are a wine lover, Hallowine is an event you can’t miss because it’s free admission! Here they mix the best of Halloween, Day of the Dead and wine for you to experience an event like no other.
Viñedos La Redonda is organizing an event full of costume contests, nightly wine tours, tastings, gastronomy and horror winery.
