We are all sleepy when we travel by public transportation! However, you should be careful because you could lose your money. Yes, there is a fine for falling asleep in the Metro! You would be breaking Mexico City’ s Civic Culture Law.
What does the law say? First we go to the Regulation of the Mobility Law, which states that it is forbidden to stay in the cars, facilities and carriages outside the permitted hours and service. In addition, it mentions that you cannot enter the facilities that are for the exclusive use of authorized personnel.
This can be found in article 230, sections XIV and XV.
On the other hand, Article 29 of Mexico City’ s Civic Culture Law establishes that people who enter restricted areas in public service places (such as the capital’s subway) will be punished.
What are the penalties for entering restricted areas?
There are four types of infractions: warning, fine, arrest and community work. Falling asleep in the CDMX Metro involves:
- Fine of 21 to 30 Measurement Units (UMA).
- Arrest from 25 to 36 hours.
- Community work from 12 to 18 hours.
In short: the amount you should pay is between $2,375 and $3,394.
Think twice before you blink your eyes on the Metro! Anticipate your descent or, by all means, set the alarm on your cell phone.
