Did you know that to see the forest light up you don’t have to go too far, or even leave the CDMX? The firefly season has begun in Chapultepec Forest, we tell you where you can see them.
Every year, during the summer, different forests in Mexico are filled with lights at nightfall. The ones responsible for making the forest look magical? The fireflies!
In the CDMX, with the beginning of the rainy season, fireflies make their presence felt in the CDMX’s favorite urban forest.
Can you imagine being able to witness the light show that is the mating ritual of Mexico’s endemic fireflies? The popularly called “fairies of the forest” or “beetles with light” come out of their cocoons in June, so by July they are ready to look for a mate.
It is the males who light up their abdomen to attract their mate and offer a unique spectacle that captivates with its magic and that can be commonly admired in places not so far from the CDMX.
However, one of the privileged places that host this show is our beautiful Chapultepec Forest, which is painted with lights at night in the high humidity areas of the First and Third Sections of Chapultepec Forest.
It is important for you to know that the Bosque de Chapultepec does not offer tours to see them for the protection of the fireflies. If you are lucky enough to encounter them, you must be very careful to take care of their environment so as not to harm them.
