If you thought you had to travel to the other side of the world to see a landscape worthy of *Avatar*, we have a surprise for you. Just a few hours from Mexico City, there’s an experience that takes you on a journey through a forest where nature reveals hidden colors and glimmers thanks to the phenomenon of biofluorescence.
It’s called Avatar: Fluorescent Forest, a nighttime tour in Querétaro’s Sierra Gorda that combines hiking, science, and nature in an adventure led by experts. During the hike, you’ll discover how fungi, lichens, mosses, resins, and even some insects glow under ultraviolet light, creating a landscape that looks like something out of a fantasy movie.
A nighttime tour to discover an amazing natural phenomenon
The experience takes place in the community of El Doctor, in the municipality of Cadereyta, an area of the Sierra Gorda in Querétaro known for its natural richness and minimal human impact.
The tour includes approximately 3 kilometers of beginner-level hiking, making it suitable for most people with average physical fitness. In addition to walking through the forest, a biologist and a certified guide will explain how biofluorescence occurs and why some organisms emit these surprising colors when illuminated with UV light.
The package also includes the loan of specialized ultraviolet lighting equipment, travel insurance, personalized attention, and a regional dinner prepared by the local community.
