Do you already know how the garbage separation campaign will be in CDMX? At a press conference, the capital authorities informed that now garbage must be separated into three types; in addition, the collection schedule was announced.
During the presentation of the Integral Waste Management Agency, Clara Brugada, head of the Mexico City government, explained that currently only 15% of all waste is correctly separated.
For this reason, the program Transforma tu Ciudad, Cada Basura en su Lugar (Transform your City, Each Garbage in its Place) will be launched, with which a new waste separation and collection scheme will be adapted in Mexico City.
This is how garbage separation will be in CDMX
This measure will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026. Garbage will have to be separated into three:
- Organic waste (food scraps, pruning and gardening): collection days will be Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Inorganic recyclable waste (PET, metals, paper, cardboard, glass and aluminum).
- Non-recyclable inorganic waste: sanitary waste, cigarette butts and diapers, for example.
All inorganic waste will be collected on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays; however, it must be delivered in a differentiated manner between recyclable and non-recyclable waste.
Each type of waste will have a different destination. Organic waste will go to composting and hydrothermal carbonization, while inorganic waste will go to recycling and non-recyclable waste will go to refuse-derived fuel and landfill.
Although the measure starts on January 1, 2026, the information campaign will begin earlier in order to inform the population. In addition, it was explained that this scheme is not so new, but “rather a deepening of the waste separation scheme, in three”, said the head of government.
