It is now official! The Official Gazette of Mexico City published a reform that prohibits the denial of housing rental because of having pets or children. We tell you what it is all about.
When this reform was discussed a couple of months ago in the Congress of the City of Mexico City, it was explained that this initiative sought to strengthen the human right to housing through the “elimination of discriminatory practices that exclude those who live with children or pets”.
It was explained that, according to Copred, at least 25% of the complaints of discrimination in housing have to do with children and pets.
When does the law reform on renting housing with children or pets go into effect?
This new measure went into effect this Monday, October 27. As detailed in the Official Gazette of the CDMX, Article 4 of the Housing Law for Mexico City was amended, which states that “For no reason will be an obstacle for the exercise of the right to housing, the economic condition, ethnic or national origin, physical appearance…”.
The text “as well as cohabitation with infants and sentient beings” was added to said article. What do you think of this new measure?
