The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) announced which license plate holders are subject to fines in CDMX. We tell you everything you need to know about it, including the cost of such penalties.
The first thing you need to know is that Article 45 of the Traffic Regulations establishes that license plates must be free of any object that “hinders or obstructs their visibility or registration, as well as neon lights around them”.
Additionally, Article 43, Section III establishes that it is prohibited to install neon lights or plate holders that hinder the visibility of the license plates. It is also forbidden to place micas or plates that cover any digit or data of the same.
This is the fine for using license plate holders in CDMX that cover digits or other information.
The Traffic Regulations state that the fine for using license plate holders or any object that does not allow the digits and city of issuance to be seen is 10, 15 or 20 UMAs, i.e. $1,131.4, $1,697.1 or $2,262.8.
Now, will the use of any license plate holder be fined? No. Pablo Vázquez, head of the SSC, explained that if the plate holder does not cover or prevent the reading of all the digits and issuing entity of the plate, it may be used without any problem. In other words, these items are not prohibited.
He also explained that devices have been established to verify that all license plates circulating in CDMX are easily identifiable, with two objectives: sanctions for cars that fall into behaviors that put everyone’s safety at risk, as well as to follow up on “people allegedly linked to crimes”.
