It’s back-to-school time, but it’s also a good time to get a thorough understanding of the school calendar so you can plan getaways or figure out who will take care of the kids on those workdays. The 2026–2027 school year began on August 31 and will include several long weekends, school breaks, and days without classes that are worth keeping track of.
According to the official calendar from the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), this school year includes 185 effective school days for preschool, elementary, and middle school. The school year will end on July 9, 2027.
Long weekends and days off for the 2026–2027 school year
Get out your calendar! In addition to school breaks, the 2026–2027 school year includes various days when classes are suspended and School Technical Council (CTE) meetings are held. Here are the dates you should keep in mind:
- Wednesday, September 16, 2026: Commemoration of Mexican Independence.
- Friday, September 25, 2026: School Technical Council meeting.
- Friday, October 30, 2026: School Technical Council.
- Monday, November 2, 2026: No classes.
- Monday, November 16, 2026: Commemoration of the Mexican Revolution.
- Friday, November 27, 2026: School Technical Council.
- Friday, January 29, 2027: School Technical Council.
- Monday, February 1, 2027: Constitution Day.
- Friday, February 26, 2027: School Technical Council.
- Monday, March 15, 2027: Commemoration of Benito Juárez’s birthday.

When are winter break and Holy Week?
Winter break will begin on December 21, 2026, and run through January 5, 2027. However, there will be no classes on Wednesday, January 6, so students will return to the classroom on Thursday, January 7.
The second major break will be during Holy Week. The school break is scheduled for March 22 through April 3, 2027, so classes will resume after this period.
The calendar applies to public and private preschool, elementary, and middle schools that are part of the National Education System throughout Mexico.
