The Mesoamerican ballgame is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic traditions of Mexico’s indigenous cultures, and it will now return to historic venues in the capital and its surrounding areas with a series of free demonstrations open to the public. The goal is to demonstrate that this practice is still alive and represents one of Mesoamerica’s most important cultural legacies.
On several dates in Juneand July, visitors will be able to watch ballgame and ulama exhibitions at venues administered by the INAH. These activities will bring together practitioners and associations dedicated to preserving this ancestral tradition, considered one of the oldest sporting and ritual expressions on the continent.
Mesoamerican ballgame comes to archaeological sites and museums
Among the participating venues is the Cuicuilco Archaeological Zone, where demonstrations will take place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at two times: 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The National Museum of the Viceroyalty will also participate, hosting activities on Sunday, June 28, and again on Sunday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m.
One of the most anticipated events will take place at the Tlatelolco Archaeological Zone on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 6:20 p.m. The Pucxikal Keej Group ( Heart of the Deer) will perform there, in collaboration with the Mesoamerican Ballgame Association.
A living tradition that continues to make its mark
More than just a sporting event, the Mesoamerican ballgame is a cultural expression that connects with the history, worldview, and traditions of indigenous peoples. Through these demonstrations, attendees will be able to see firsthand how this discipline is currently practiced and understand its importance within Mexico’s cultural heritage.
The activities are part of the initiative “The World’s Largest Court Is Mexico’s Culture, ” a project that seeks to bring cultural and community expressions to iconic venues across the country.
