We chilangos have a reputation for being great hosts! Mexico City was recognized as one of the 10 friendliest cities in the world in 2026, according to the Friendliest Cities Index 2026, a study commissioned by the travel platform Fernwayer.
Our city ranked ninth worldwide, with a score of 93.2 out of 100, standing out for the hospitality, friendliness, and willingness of its residents to help visitors.
Although Mexico City is one of the largest and busiest metropolises on the planet, travelers found something that goes beyond its museums, restaurants, and tourist attractions: the warmth of its people.
Why is Mexico City among the friendliest cities in the world?
The study analyzed more than 1.2 million Reddit comments about 200 cities, compiled from communities related to travel and urban destinations.
To compile the ranking, researchers evaluated how often visitors described residents as kind, hospitable, or welcoming, in contrast to negative experiences.
In the case of Mexico City, travelers noted that chilangos are down-to-earth, willing to help, and surprisingly friendly—even given the capital’s fast-paced lifestyle.
This result also shows that a huge city doesn’t necessarily have to feel cold or distant to those who come to explore it.
These are the 10 friendliest cities in the world in 2026

Mexico has two reasons to celebrate, as Mérida, Yucatán, took first place worldwide with 95 points, surpassing European and U.S. destinations.
Furthermore, the Mexican capital ranked higher than other major cities such as London, New York, and Paris.
It should be noted that this ranking reflects experiences shared by Reddit users, so it does not represent a definitive measure of the character of all residents.
Even so, the result highlights something that many visitors find in Mexico City: a city where, amid the daily hustle and bustle, there’s still room for a conversation, a recommendation, or a helping hand.
